Mwanase Ahmed was born and raised in Lamu, Kenya. She is a Co-owner and the General Manager of Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers in Kilifi. Mwanase has a great passion for environmental and social activism, care and consciousness, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Thought and Political Economy from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Having lived in the United States, Senegal, France and Kenya. She has a global understanding and approach towards the concept of sustainability and how it varies regionally and throughout different industries. Her current work with Distant Relatives allows her to incorporate her expertise and passion for ecotourism, community development and permaculture while managing a vibrant business which is both a message of optimism and an experimental model of environmentally and socially conscious living.
